Earthlings

Today I spent lots of time on the internet researching ways to look after the environment. I came across a movie called Earthlings and proceeded to watch the movie. Amongst other things the movie depicts the process of producing and slaughtering animals for food. To say that the movie is disturbing is an understatement and it is hard to watch so many of the scenes without crying. I am not sure if all of these processes are employed here in Australia - I would hope not but nonetheless I have come to the conclusion that eating meat is seriously wrong in so many ways. Firstly animals have as much right to live as we do, secondly because of the environmental impact and thirdly because of the processes used throughout the production of meat including the involvement of chemicals and the methods used to kill the animals. It's easy enough for us to walk into a supermarket and pick up a tray of chicken without thinking about how it got there. So hopefully I am planning to change my life for the better by becoming vegetarian. I know that this will take some work to change my diet and work with my hubby so that he is happy with our meals. I don't think I can go vegan at this stage but I already drink soy milk and buy organic, free range eggs so this is a good starting point for me. I would suggest that watching earthlings is very important for everyone if you feel like you can stomach it.

Meatless Monday

I am looking to make some big changes in my life to help look after the environment. The more research I do the more I realise that it is a matter of making lots of small changes rather than a few big ones. Here are a few changes I will be making to do my little bit - more to come.

Meatless Monday - A great idea to help reduce our footprint - follow the link to sign up

Green Energy - Lots of providers are now offering green power - so make the switch!

and some smaller things - buy less (from the shop), drive less (it's not too hard), reuse, green cleaning with microfibre products

The list goes on and on!

KeepCup's

Our KeepCups arrived today! I ordered them over the weekend so was happy to arrive home today and find them in the mailbox. The idea is that you take your KeepCup along with you to work or out and about and ask your barista to make your coffee up in your KeepCup rather than disposable cups.

They can also be used for juice, soups, tea & water. They come in a range of sizes and colours and are a fantastic way to help reduce our impact on the environment.

Becoming GREENER

Over the past few weeks I have been thinking a lot about my effect on the environment and becoming more environmentally responsible. Sometimes it is easy to become a little lazy and forget to take your green bag to the shop or separate the paper items in the rubbish. If every little bit counts it really is up to me to make changes at my end. Here are some handy tips via Ecodirectory which I have selected as really easy things we can do to make a difference:

1. Take shorter showers - simple!

2. Start composting

3. Reduce, re-use, recycle

4. Eat locally grown - there are farmers markets springing up all over the place and they are a great excuse not to shop at Coles and Safeway.

5. Eat organic - most supermarkets are starting to stock more and more organic items and I personally feel like eating organic is such a great option if you can manage it.

6. Eat less meat - I have never been a big meat eater so this won't be too much of a problem for me. Along the same lines - always buy free-range meat and eggs if you can.

7. Drive the car less - good for the environment and good for you!

8. Vote GREEN! With the election coming up it is a good chance for us to put our support behind the greens and hopefully make a change for the future. You can sign up to their green wall and make a pledge of support - here.

Good luck!!

Hello!

Welcome to my new blog. My previous blog was all about wedding planning and once the wedding was over it got a little lost in the dark. But, I have been missing blogging so much that I have started this new blog. It will focus on my new direction in life and some of my interests such as being more environmentally responsible, adopting a puppy for our new house, starting up my veggie garden, exploring great food and getting super fit and healthy.

I hope to share many exciting things and make some friends along the way!
